What Is the Fungi Chart Used For?
Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that cannot make their own food. Most are built from fine threads called hyphae, which form a network, the mycelium; their cell walls contain chitin; and they reproduce mainly by spores. They feed by absorbing nutrients: saprophytes such as Mucor, Rhizopus (bread mould) and most mushrooms break down dead matter, parasites such as rusts, smuts and powdery mildews attack living plants and animals, and some live in partnership with other organisms, as in lichens and mycorrhizae. Fungi are useful — yeast in baking and brewing, Penicillium as the source of penicillin, edible mushrooms such as Agaricus, and decomposers that recycle nutrients — and harmful, as causes of crop diseases, food spoilage and infections such as ringworm.
Kingdom Fungi is covered in the class 11 biology chapter on biological classification, and fungal plant diseases come up again in agriculture and microbiology courses. Students can grow bread mould on a damp slice of bread in a closed box and compare it with the chart under a hand lens; they should wash their hands afterwards and avoid breathing in the spores. The laminated chart wipes clean and rolls up on its plastic rollers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are fungi plants?
No. Fungi were once grouped with plants and are still often taught in botany, but they form a separate kingdom: they have no chlorophyll, cannot make their own food and have cell walls of chitin.
How do fungi obtain their food?
By absorbing nutrients from their surroundings — from dead matter as saprophytes, from living hosts as parasites, or through partnerships such as lichens and mycorrhizae.
Which fungi are useful to people?
Yeast for baking and brewing, Penicillium for the antibiotic penicillin, and edible mushrooms such as Agaricus; many fungi also recycle nutrients by decomposing dead material.
