What Is the Mucor Chart Used For?

Mucor is a saprophytic fungus: it lives on dead organic matter such as moist bread, fruit and dung and absorbs the food it digests. Its body is a cottony mycelium of branched hyphae without cross-walls, so each hypha is a continuous tube containing many nuclei. For asexual reproduction, upright hyphae called sporangiophores carry round sporangia full of spores; these dark heads on fine stalks give the pin mould its name. When hyphae of two compatible strains meet, their tips fuse in conjugation and form a thick-walled zygospore that can survive dry or cold periods. Mucor, together with Rhizopus and Albugo, is a class 11 example of the phycomycetes in the chapter on biological classification, and moulds on bread are a common class 8 observation in the lesson on microorganisms.

A slice of moist bread kept in a closed container for a few days will grow mould that students can examine under a hand lens or a low-power microscope and compare with the chart; the container should stay closed and be disposed of safely afterwards. The laminated chart wipes clean and rolls up on its rollers. The listing does not describe the artwork, so ask JLab for a larger image if you need to check its labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mucor Chart used for?
It is used to teach the structure and reproduction of Mucor, the pin mould, in class 11 biology and college botany or microbiology. The listing does not detail the artwork; see the photograph on this page or ask JLab for a larger image.

How large is the chart and how is it finished?
It is 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), printed in full colour on art paper, laminated on both sides with thick plastic film and hung from plastic rollers.

Why is Mucor called pin mould?
Because its sporangia sit on top of slender, upright sporangiophores and look like tiny pinheads on the surface of the food. The heads darken as the spores inside mature.

What is the difference between Mucor and Rhizopus?
Both are phycomycete moulds with aseptate hyphae and spores formed in sporangia. Rhizopus, the common bread mould, spreads by arching runners and anchors itself with root-like rhizoids under clusters of sporangiophores; Mucor usually lacks these runners and rhizoids.
