Agaricus as the Type Fungus
Agaricus is the genus that includes the cultivated button mushroom. The fungus lives as a mycelium, a network of fine hyphae that spreads through soil or compost and absorbs food from decaying matter, since fungi have no chlorophyll. When conditions suit, the mycelium produces the fruiting body: a stalk with a ring and a cap with gills underneath. Basidiospores form on basidia along the gills after nuclear fusion and meiosis, and each spore can grow into a new mycelium. Fungal walls contain chitin, not cellulose, one feature that sets fungi apart from plants.
