Fitting the Right Size
Because each stopper tapers, one size covers a small band of neck diameters. Pick the size whose narrow end slips into the mouth and whose wide end does not, then press it in with a slight twist. A good fit goes partway into the neck and leaves enough standing above the rim to grip when it has to come out. Small sizes suit test tubes, larger ones flask and bottle necks.
Using Solid Stoppers Safely
A solid stopper closes the vessel completely, so it is meant for storing and carrying samples and for temporary sealing. Do not stopper glassware that is being heated or a mixture that is giving off gas, as pressure can build up and push the stopper out. Twist rather than pull to remove a tight stopper.
