How the Compass Sets the Sundial
A sundial gives the time only when its gnomon, the edge that casts the shadow, lies along the north-south line. The compass is used to orient the gnomon: turn the base until the needle points to north, and the shadow then falls on the hour of solar time. Magnetic north differs slightly from true north, so the reading is approximate.
