Setting the Dial with Its Compass
Place the compass on a level surface in direct sun and turn it until the needle lines up with the N mark. The shadow of the gnomon then marks local solar time on the dial. Two corrections apply when you compare it with a watch: a magnetic needle points to magnetic north rather than true north, and solar time differs from time-zone clock time by an amount that changes through the year.
