Taking a Bearing to Half a Degree
The compass is set up on its tripod over the station and levelled, then sighted at a ranging rod held at the far end of the line. When the needle comes to rest, the bearing is read off the circle; with 30-minute divisions, readings are taken to the nearest half degree. Observing a fore bearing and a back bearing on every line shows up local magnetic attraction at a station, since the pair should point in exactly opposite directions.
