What Is a Side-Arm Test Tube Used For?
With a stopper in the mouth, the side arm becomes the only outlet, which turns the tube into a small gas generator: for example, carbon dioxide from marble chips and dilute acid can be led through rubber tubing into lime water to show it turning milky. Connected to a suction line, the same tube collects the filtrate when a small funnel is fitted in the stopper. Borosilicate glass handles gentle heating better than soda glass, so the tube can also be warmed when a reaction needs it.
