Setting Up the Tripod Over a Burner
Stand the tripod on a heat-resistant surface with the burner underneath, then lay a gauze across the top before placing a beaker or flask on it, so the flame is spread instead of striking the glass at one spot. A crucible sits in a pipe clay triangle on the top instead. Fix the position with the mounting screw before lighting the burner, and control the heat at the burner rather than by moving the stand.
The cast iron top stays hot for some time after the flame is out, so let it cool or move it with tongs.
