Picking the Size and Reading It
Use the smallest cylinder that holds the whole volume: 10 ml read on the 10 ml cylinder, marked every 0.1 ml, is far more precise than the same 10 ml on the 500 ml cylinder, marked every 5 ml. Stand the cylinder on a level bench and read the bottom of the meniscus with your eye level with it. Measure liquids cool, as warm liquids expand and read high.
Cylinders suit everyday measuring of reagents, solvents and water. When a titration or a standard solution needs an exact volume, measure it with a pipette or burette instead.
