Setting Up for Heating
Stand the tripod on a heat-proof mat and lay a wire gauze across the top to spread the flame and support glassware. Adjust the burner so the tip of the inner blue cone sits just below the gauze, where the flame is hottest. A crucible can rest in a pipe-clay triangle placed on the tripod instead of the gauze. The top stays hot for some time after the burner is turned off, so leave it to cool before moving the stand.
