What Is the Tullgren Funnel Used For?
It applies the Berlese–Tullgren principle: soil animals avoid heat and drying, so they retreat downwards as the lamp warms the sample and fall out of the bottom of the funnel. Taking equal amounts of soil from a lawn, a flower bed and woodland litter lets a class compare the numbers and kinds of mites, springtails, beetle larvae and other small animals, and senior students can turn the counts into a simple diversity comparison.
