What Is the Tullgren Funnel Used For?
Soil animals move away from heat, light and drying soil, so as the lamp warms the top of the sample they work downwards and drop through the mesh. Mites, springtails, insect larvae, small beetles, centipedes and millipedes are typical finds. Students can compare leaf litter, lawn and garden soil, count and identify the animals, and discuss the decomposers and detritivores covered in class 12 ecology, as well as soil topics in middle school and field work in college zoology. Put a little alcohol in the collecting vessel to preserve the catch, or damp tissue to keep it alive, and leave the lamp on for several hours. The lamp gets hot: keep it clear of paper and do not leave it on unattended.
