Why the Resonance Box Makes the Note Louder
A struck fork on its own moves little air, so its note is faint. Stand its stem on the resonance box and the vibration passes into the box; the air column inside matches the frequency of the fork, so it vibrates in resonance and the note becomes clearly louder. Touch the prongs with a finger and the sound stops at once.
Experiments on Sound
Press the stem of a sounding fork on a bench, a wooden board or a metal rod and the note carries through the material, showing that solids conduct sound. Turn a sounding fork slowly beside the ear and the note fades and returns at certain angles, as the waves from the two prongs interfere. Strike a fork on a rubber bung or the heel of the hand rather than a hard surface; this keeps the tone clean and avoids damaging the prongs.
