Gases Made With the Dilute Acid
On marble chips, which are calcium carbonate, it gives carbon dioxide; on granulated zinc, hydrogen; and on ferrous sulphide, hydrogen sulphide. A Kipp’s apparatus can deliver any of the three on demand. Every carbonate fizzes with it, and the gas turns lime water milky.
Group I in Salt Analysis
Added to the original solution, it throws down the group I cations as white chlorides of silver, lead(II) and mercury(I). Lead chloride dissolves in hot water, which separates it from the other two, and the acidic filtrate passes on to group II.
