Converging and Diverging Lenses Compared
A converging (convex) lens bends parallel rays inwards so that they meet at its focal point, and it can form a real image on a screen. A diverging (concave) lens spreads parallel rays outwards as if they came from a point in front of the lens, so its image is virtual and its focal length carries a minus sign. A shorter focal length means a stronger lens: the 5 cm lenses bend light most and the 20 cm lenses least.
Experiments with the Stands
Stand a converging lens upright, focus a distant window onto a sheet of paper and measure the lens-to-paper distance to estimate its focal length. Lenses placed close together combine: the 10 cm converging lens touching the -20 cm diverging lens behaves as a single converging lens of 20 cm focal length. The stands can also hold a mirror for work on reflection.
