Why Both Wires Hang from One Support
Both wires of Searle’s apparatus hang from the same support: one carries the load and the other stays as a reference. If the support yields slightly or the room warms, both wires move together and the spirit level between them stays level, so only the stretch of the loaded wire is measured. Fix the mount to solid masonry or a beam, high enough for long wires, because a longer wire gives a larger extension that is easier to read.
