From Turning Handle to Glowing Bulb
Turning the coil in the magnet’s field keeps changing the magnetic flux through it, and that change induces an EMF across the coil ends. Because the hand pulley is larger than the dynamo pulley, the armature turns faster than the handle, and the faster it spins, the higher the EMF and the brighter the bulbs. In an AC dynamo the coil connects through slip rings and the output reverses every half turn; a DC dynamo uses a commutator so that the current flows one way.
Motor and Dynamo Side by Side
The dynamo is built on the same basic assembly as the motor model, mounted on a base plate. Shown together, the pair makes the point that one machine works both ways: fed with current it turns, and turned by hand it generates current. With the bulbs connected the handle becomes harder to turn, because the induced current opposes the motion that produces it.
