Choosing the 1 s or 10 s Gate Time
The gate time is the interval over which the counter collects input cycles before it updates the display. The 10 s gate collects ten times as many cycles as the 1 s gate, so the reading resolves ten times finer and shows one more digit, but a new value appears only every ten seconds. The 1 s gate suits a signal that is being adjusted; the 10 s gate suits a steady source that needs the finer reading.
Period Mode for Slow Signals
Counting cycles works well for fast signals but gives few counts for slow ones: a 5 Hz signal yields only five cycles in a 1 s gate. Period mode measures the time taken by one cycle instead, which gives a far more useful reading near the 0.1 Hz end of the range. Frequency is the reciprocal of the period, so either reading can be converted to the other.
