Supplying an Air Track
The hose connects the blower to the inlet of the track. Air forced into the hollow profile escapes through the rows of small holes and lifts the gliders onto a thin film of air, which is what lets them run almost without friction.
Lift and Drag on Different Shapes
Directed at a body, the airstream produces a drag force along the direction of flow and, on a wing-like shape, a lift force across it. Comparing bodies of different shapes in the same flow shows how much the outline matters: a streamlined body meets far less drag than a flat plate facing the air.
