Using the Rider on the Notched Beam
Masses below the smallest weight of a weight set are made up with a rider, a small wire weight placed on the beam. Its turning effect is proportional to its distance from the centre, so moving it out along the graduated notches adds mass in even steps, and the amount is read from the notch it sits in rather than by loading tiny weights onto the pan. Level the case with its screws before weighing, and keep the glass front closed while reading so draughts do not disturb the beam.
