Catalyst and Oxidising Agent
A little of the oxide added to hydrogen peroxide solution sets off a steady stream of oxygen: 2H2O2 → 2H2O + O2, and the gas relights a glowing splint. Filtered, washed and dried afterwards, the oxide has the same mass as before, which shows it acted as a catalyst and was not used up. Warmed with concentrated hydrochloric acid it is itself reduced, MnO2 + 4HCl → MnCl2 + Cl2 + 2H2O, and greenish-yellow chlorine is given off.
