How the Filings Show a Field
In a magnetic field each filing becomes a tiny magnet and turns to lie along the field line passing through it, so a scatter of filings settles into a pattern of lines. They crowd most thickly where the field is strongest, near the poles. The pattern shows the shape and orientation of the field; a small compass placed on a line shows which way it runs, from north pole to south pole.
Using Them Cleanly
Lay a sheet of card or paper over the magnet, sprinkle a thin layer of filings and tap the card gently so they settle into the pattern. Keeping the card between the magnet and the filings stops them sticking to the magnet, and afterwards the card can be folded to pour the filings back into the jar.
