Reading the Friction Force
Attach a spring balance to the hook and pull the block horizontally at a steady speed. At constant speed the pull balances the kinetic friction, so the reading is the friction force. Dividing that force by the normal force, which on a level bench equals the weight of the block plus any added load, gives the coefficient of kinetic friction. Turning the block onto a different surface, or adding weights on top, and pulling again shows how the material and the normal force change the result.
