Heparinised or Plain
Heparin is an anticoagulant, so a heparinised tube suits blood taken straight from a finger prick, which would otherwise start to clot in the tube. Plain tubes are used for blood already mixed with anticoagulant in a collection tube. After filling, one end is sealed and the tubes are spun in a haematocrit centrifuge to read the packed cell volume.
