What Is the Cavity Slide Used For?
The hollow in a cavity slide holds more liquid than a flat slide, so living organisms can swim freely instead of being crushed under the cover slip. The classic use is the hanging-drop preparation: a drop of culture is placed on a cover slip, the slide is inverted over it so the drop hangs inside the cavity, and the edges are sealed with a thin ring of petroleum jelly. Students use it to watch Paramecium and other pond-water organisms in biology practicals and to check bacterial motility in college microbiology. It is a useful addition to any temporary slides biology kit. Wash the slides in warm soapy water, rinse, dry them with a lint-free cloth, and hold them by the edges.
