Constant Mesh Gear Box Actual Cut Section (code EL-IEL-10119) is a sectioned constant mesh gearbox, assembled from actual parts on a square iron pipe frame, for showing students how gears that never leave mesh can still give separate ratios. All the necessary parts are in working form and the unit is dissectible. It is one of the transmission sections JLab makes in Ambala, India.

Dog Clutches Instead of Sliding Gears
In a constant mesh gearbox every pair of gears is always engaged: the layshaft gears are fixed to their shaft, while the matching main-shaft gears turn freely on bearings. A ratio is chosen by sliding a dog clutch along the splined main shaft until its teeth lock into the side of the wanted gear, which then drives the output.
Where It Sits Between Sliding Mesh and Synchromesh
Compared with a sliding mesh box, the gear teeth no longer have to be pushed into mesh, so helical gears can be used. Compared with synchromesh, there are no cones to match speeds first, so the driver still has to judge engine speed or double declutch for a clean change.
Related Sliding Mesh and Synchromesh Models
- Sliding Mesh Gear Box Actual Cut Section — the design where the gears themselves slide into mesh.
- Synchromesh Gear Box - 4 Forward and 1 Reverse — adds synchroniser cones; four forward speeds and one reverse.
- Synchromesh Gear Box — a synchromesh gearbox model paired with a single plate clutch.
