Loading the Jar and Running a Stain
Slides stand on edge in the slots, held apart so the stain reaches each specimen. Standing them singly gives 5 slides; pairing them back-to-back, with the specimen sides facing outwards, raises the load to 10.
Because one jar needs only about 60 ml, a row of jars can hold the separate solutions of a staining run, such as hematoxylin, rinse water and eosin, and the slides are carried from one jar to the next. The soda-lime glass resists staining from eosin or hematoxylin.
