How the Monobed Cartridge Works
Water enters through the ¾ inch inlet and flows through a single bed of mixed cation- and anion-exchange resin. The cation resin exchanges dissolved metal ions such as calcium and sodium for hydrogen ions, while the anion resin exchanges chloride, sulphate and similar ions for hydroxide ions; the hydrogen and hydroxide ions then combine to form water. With fewer ions left to carry current, the water conducts less, which is why its purity is expressed as resistivity.
Knowing When to Change the Cartridge
The capacity of 1050 grains as CaCO3 is the quantity of dissolved ions, expressed as calcium carbonate, that the resin can take up before it is exhausted, so feed water with more dissolved solids uses up a cartridge sooner. As the resin nears exhaustion, the resistivity of the output falls and the colour-coded indicator shows it, telling the user to fit a new disposable cartridge.
