Why should a boiler be fed with soft water?
Hard water leaves scale on the heating surfaces as it boils. Scale slows the flow of heat into the water, so more fuel is burned for the same steam. Soft or treated feed water keeps the surfaces cleaner between services.
What do students measure in a simple boiler trial?
The fuel burned and the water turned into steam over a timed run, along with the feed water temperature and the steam pressure shown on the gauge. From these they work out how much steam each litre of diesel gives.
