What Is the Cochran Boiler Model Used For?
It is used to teach steam boilers in mechanical and thermal engineering, for example in ITI, polytechnic and engineering college labs. In a fire-tube boiler the hot gases flow inside the tubes and the water surrounds them, the reverse of a water-tube boiler. A vertical design such as the Cochran needs little floor space, which suited plants that needed only a modest supply of steam.

What do the mountings on the model do?
The safety valve releases steam if the pressure rises above its set limit; the feed check valve lets feed water into the boiler but stops it flowing back; the stop valve controls the steam leaving the boiler; the water gauge shows the water level and the steam gauge the pressure; and the manhole gives access for inspection and cleaning.
Why do the tubes have covers at both ends?
Soot and ash from the hot gases collect inside fire tubes and reduce heat transfer, so the covers can be taken off and the tubes cleaned.
