What Is the Marcet Boiler Used For?
A Marcet boiler is the classic apparatus for showing how the boiling temperature of water rises with pressure. With the pressure gauge and a thermometer in the jacket, pairs of pressure and temperature readings can be taken in a heat engines or thermodynamics class and compared with values in steam tables.

Why does the boiling point rise with pressure?
Water boils when its vapour pressure equals the pressure above it. In a closed vessel the steam that forms raises the pressure, so the water must be hotter before it can boil again; at 45 lb per square inch it boils well above its normal boiling point.
