How a Calorific Value Is Found
A weighed sample goes into the stainless steel crucible, with the nichrome ignition wire and a cotton thread arranged to fire it; volatile liquid fuels can be sealed in a gelatine capsule first. The bomb is closed, charged with oxygen through the pressure gauge and fine adjustment valve, and set on its support in the calorimeter vessel with a known mass of water, all inside the water jacket. The stirrer keeps the water mixed, the firing unit ignites the sample, and the water temperature is followed against the timer until it peaks.
Burning benzoic acid of known calorific value first gives the water equivalent of the vessel and bomb. For the fuel, gross calorific value = (mass of water + water equivalent) × specific heat of water × temperature rise ÷ sample mass, less small corrections for the burnt wire and thread. Because the water formed in combustion condenses inside the sealed bomb, the result is the gross value rather than the net value. After a test, the gas release valve vents the bomb before it is opened.
