What Is the Locomotive Boiler Model Used For?
It is used in mechanical engineering teaching to explain the multi-tubular fire-tube boiler used on steam locomotives. Such a boiler has to raise a lot of steam from a compact, mobile unit, so many fire tubes carry the hot gases through the water-filled barrel, from the fire box at one end to the smoke box at the other.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the blast pipe in the smoke box do?
On a working locomotive, exhaust steam from the cylinders leaves through the blast pipe nozzle and up the chimney. This creates a strong draught that pulls air through the fire and draws the hot gases through the fire tubes, so the fire burns harder as the engine works harder.
Why does a locomotive boiler have a steam dome?
The dome collects steam at the highest point of the boiler, away from the water surface, so drier steam is taken off; the regulator then controls how much of it goes to the cylinders.
What does the dissected barrel show?
It opens the barrel to view, so students can see inside the boiler along the route the hot gases take between the fire box and the smoke box.
What should an export enquiry include?
The number of models, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling requirements and any tender reference.
