What Is the Bunsen Burner Used For?
Set on a bench next to a gas tap, the burner heats beakers and flasks on a tripod stand with wire gauze, warms test tubes and boiling tubes held in a holder, and sterilises inoculating loops, needles and forceps tips by flaming. In biology practicals it boils a leaf in water before the starch test — the alcohol step that follows is done in a water bath, never over the open flame. The cast iron base keeps the burner steady when the tubing is pulled.
Because there is no stopcock on the burner, the gas is turned on and off at the bench tap, and the air regulator sets the flame: a nearly closed port gives a yellow, sooty flame, while an open port gives the hotter blue flame used for heating. Push the tubing well over the riffled connector so the ridges grip it, check the tubing for cracks before each session, and if the flame drops down and burns inside the tube, shut the gas, let the burner cool and relight with less air.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “without stopcock” mean on this burner?
It has no gas valve of its own. Gas flow is controlled at the bench gas tap it is connected to, and the only adjustment on the burner itself is the air supply port.
Which gas does the burner run on?
The listing does not state a gas type. Tell JLab whether your lab uses LPG or natural gas when you ask for a quotation.
How does it differ from the other JLab burner listings?
The two Biology Lab listings named Burner carry the same description as this one, with a different catalogue model number. The Burner Bunsen with Stopcock is the version that has its own stopcock to control the gas at the burner.
Who manufactures this Bunsen burner?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
Behind the JLab name is Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of school and college lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and working from Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This burner is produced in JLab’s own works, not bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order it factory-direct and repeat orders come from the same maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Hong Kong in East Asia, Congo in Central Africa, Mali in West Africa, Indonesia in Southeast Asia and Peru in South America are some examples. Tender enquiries can start from the lab tenders page.
