What Is the Kidney Model Used For?
Textbook diagrams of a kidney section can be hard to read; a three-dimensional model makes the layers easier to see. Students find the outer cortex (cortical substance), the cone-shaped pyramids of the medulla, and the papilla at the tip of each pyramid, where urine drips into a minor calyx. Minor calyces join into major calyces, these empty into the pelvis, and the pelvis narrows into the ureter, while the renal artery and vein enter and leave beside it. That sequence is the core of the kidney structure taught in class 10 and in the class 11 chapter on excretory products and their elimination, and it is a useful first model in nursing and paramedical anatomy.
