Setting Up at the Bench
Push the gas tubing well over the riffled connector so that its ridges hold it, and stand the burner on a heat-resistant mat clear of papers and of the tubing itself. Close the air port, hold a lit spark lighter or match at the top of the tube, and only then open the bench gas tap. With no stopcock on the burner, the gas is set at the tap and the regulator controls only the air.
Using the Flame for Heating and Sterilising
For heating, open the air regulator until the flame turns blue with a clear inner cone; the hottest region lies just above the tip of that cone. A wire loop or needle is sterilised by holding it there until it glows red. Beakers and flasks are heated on a tripod and wire gauze rather than in the open flame.
