Separations a Class Can Run
Stir sand and salt into water and filter: the sand stays on the paper while the salt solution passes through, and evaporating the filtrate in a china dish recovers the salt. Filtering chalk from water, or the precipitate formed when two clear solutions are mixed, shows the same idea. Fold the circle in half and then in quarters, open it into a cone, and wet it with a little distilled water so it sits flat against the funnel before pouring.
