Finding the Mains Frequency
The transformer feeds alternating current from the mains to the electromagnet, which is held close to the steel wire midway between the bridges. The core pulls on the wire in both halves of every cycle, so the wire is tugged twice per cycle and vibrates at twice the mains frequency. Move the bridges until the wire gives its widest swing and measure the length l between them; the mains frequency is then f = (1/4l)√(T/m), half the frequency of the wire. Use the steel wire, as brass is not magnetic and will not respond.
Use It With
- Sonometer — wooden resonance box with a steel wire, a pulley wire and four bridges.
- Sonometer — hollow box model with brass and steel wires and two movable bridges.
- Hangers with Slotted Weights — chrome-plated hanger and slotted weight for setting the tension T.
The Physics Lab range has more electricity and sound apparatus.
