Leclanche Cell
The Leclanche cell is a type of battery invented and patented by the French scientist Georges Leclanche in 1866.
The battery generated electricity as the zinc anode began to lose electrons in a chemical process called oxidation.
This battery contains a conducting solution of ammonium chloride, a cathode of carbon, a depolarizer of manganese dioxide, and an anode of zinc.
If the battery was connected to an outside circuit, the electrical charge created by these excess electrons would be conducted by the electrolyte toward the carbon-manganese dioxide cathode.
