How Pulse Oximetry Works
Inside the clip, light-emitting diodes shine red and infrared light through the fingertip to a detector on the other side. Haemoglobin carrying oxygen and haemoglobin without it absorb these two wavelengths differently. The meter looks at the part of the signal that rises and falls with each heartbeat, which comes from arterial blood, and from it works out the percentage saturation and the pulse rate.
Display and Battery Features
A gravity sensor turns the screen to suit the way the meter is held, with four directions and six display modes to choose from. The waveform and bar graph show the pulse visually, which helps physiology classes see how the rate changes after exercise. The battery display and low-voltage warning show when power is running down.
