Reading the Solanaceae Flower
A floral diagram is a ground plan of the flower, drawn with the mother axis at the top, that shows the number, arrangement and fusion of the parts in each whorl. Solanaceae flowers are bisexual and actinomorphic, with five united sepals that often persist on the fruit, five united petals, five epipetalous stamens and a superior, bilocular ovary of two fused carpels placed obliquely, with swollen axile placentas bearing many ovules. The floral formula is K(5) C(5) A5 G(2).
