How Does It Compare with Comparative Fraction Strips?

Choose the Fraction Bar when pupils should handle separate tiles, build bars and turn tiles over to check percentages. The Comparative Fraction Strips put the fraction families on laminated strips of equal size for side-by-side comparison, and add sixteenths and decimals.

What Is the Fraction Bar Used For?

A fraction bar is a length model: one tile stands for the whole, and the same length is shared into equal sections for each fraction family. Each section is one part of the fraction, and the full row of sections makes up the whole bar. Laying fourths under a half, or twelfths under a third, lets pupils see which fractions are equal and which are larger, and makes adding and comparing fractions with the same denominator concrete. The tiles also make it easy to show the difference between the numerator (the number on top of a fraction) and the denominator (the number underneath), and how the two are related across the vinculum, the dividing line between them.

With fractional values on the front and percentages on the back, a pupil can place a fourth tile, flip it, and read the same amount as twenty-five per cent. Teachers use the bars as standalone fraction games or within a lesson plan for the fractions topics of the primary classes and of class 6 and class 7, and as a ready set for the school maths lab.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Number of sets — for example one per group of pupils, or one for the teacher to demonstrate with.
  • Other fraction aids — such as Comparative Fraction Strips or Fraction Squares, quoted on the same enquiry.
  • Delivery location — the city or the port of entry for export orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Fraction Bar set used for?
Teaching what fractions mean and how to use them. Pupils compare and combine the tiles, see equivalent fractions, and link each fraction to its percentage, either in games or as part of a planned lesson.

Which fractions are in the set?
The 51 solid plastic tiles represent a whole, halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths and twelfths.

What is printed on the tiles?
The fractional value is on the front of each tile and its percentage is on the back.

How do fraction bars explain the numerator and denominator?
By putting the numbers next to real pieces. In three twelfths, the twelve below the line says the whole bar is shared into twelve equal sections, and the three above it says how many of those sections are in use — something pupils can count with the tiles laid beside the whole bar.

How is the set stored?
The fraction bars come in a plastic tray, which keeps the tiles together between lessons.

What should an export enquiry include?
The number of sets, the destination country and port or city, preferred delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling instructions and the tender reference if relevant.

Who manufactures the Fraction Bar set?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) manufactures it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

The set is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, which trades as JLab — an Indian maker of maths lab equipment and school science apparatus, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Production takes place at JLab’s own works rather than through a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy direct from the factory, each set is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders go back to the same manufacturer. The company is registered under CIN U29309HR2017PTC069123 and holds MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 (manufacturing enterprise). JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Nepal in South Asia, Estonia in Northern Europe, the USA in North America, Luxembourg in Western Europe and Bolivia in South America are a few examples. See the JLab lab tenders page for tender enquiries.

More Fraction Manipulatives

  • Fraction Squares — a manipulative for learning fractions, percentages and decimals.
  • Fraction Dominoes — a set of 45 dominoes for fraction games, with instructions for games at different levels.
  • Magnetic Fraction Disk — 55 soft foam magnetic fraction circle pieces, one whole to tenths, for any magnetic surface.
