What Is the Fractures, Faults and Dislocations Model Used For?
When stress in the crust exceeds the strength of the rock, the rock breaks. A break with little or no movement across it is a fracture or joint; once the blocks on either side slip past each other along the break, it becomes a fault, and the surface they slide on is the fault plane. In any cross section through a fault the displacement shows clearly, because a rock layer that is continuous on one side of the plane reappears higher or lower on the other.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are faults usually classified?
By the direction of movement on the fault plane: in a normal fault the hanging wall moves down, in a reverse or thrust fault it moves up, and in a strike-slip fault the blocks slide past each other horizontally.
What should an export enquiry include?
The number of models, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, and any tender reference.
