What Is the Hollow Sphere Model Used For?
A sphere is a three-dimensional solid with one curved face and no base, edge or vertex, and every point on its surface is the same distance from the centre. A hollow sphere, or spherical shell, is the space between two such surfaces with a common centre, and this model makes that idea visible: the outer and inner spheres can be seen together, so students understand why the volume of the shell is the volume of the outer sphere minus the volume of the inner one.
