What Is the Human Skull Model Used For?
The skull is used to teach the bones that protect the brain and form the face. With the skull cap lifted off, students can look into the cranial cavity and the base of the skull, where openings called foramina let nerves and blood vessels pass — among them the foramen magnum, through which the brainstem continues into the spinal cord. The wavy sutures between the skull bones are immovable joints, while the spring-mounted mandible shows the one bone of the skull that moves, hinging at the temporomandibular joint as the mouth opens and closes.
