What Is the India and World War II Chart Used For?

When the Second World War began, the Viceroy declared India a party to it without consulting Indian leaders, and the Congress ministries in the provinces resigned in protest. This chart takes up the path chosen by Subhas Chandra Bose. A former Congress president, Bose resigned after differences with Gandhi and formed the Forward Bloc; he later escaped from house arrest in Calcutta, reached Germany and then Southeast Asia. There he took command of the Indian National Army, which had first been raised among Indian prisoners of war under Mohan Singh, and proclaimed the Azad Hind government in Singapore.

The army fought alongside Japanese forces on the Burma front, including at Imphal and Kohima, and the trials of INA officers at the Red Fort after the war stirred strong public feeling across India. The topic is a chapter of its own — the Forward Bloc and the INA — in ICSE class 10 History and Civics, and it appears in CBSE and state-board modern India lessons. Pupils can discuss why Bose sought help abroad and how the INA trials affected the last years of British rule. Hang the chart with clips or on a rail, protect it from damp and sunlight, and roll it loosely for storage.
