What Is the Quit India Movement Chart Used For?
Quit India was the last great mass movement of the freedom struggle, and ICSE class 10 History and Civics gives it a chapter of its own; it also appears in CBSE and state-board modern India lessons. After the failure of the Cripps Mission, the All India Congress Committee passed the Quit India resolution at Gowalia Tank in Bombay, now known as August Kranti Maidan, and Gandhi gave the call "Do or Die". The government arrested the Congress leaders almost at once, and the struggle passed into the hands of ordinary people — the people's movement this chart describes. There were strikes, demonstrations and attacks on railway and telegraph lines, parallel governments were set up in places such as Satara, Ballia and Tamluk, Aruna Asaf Ali hoisted the flag at Gowalia Tank, and Usha Mehta ran an underground radio station.
Gandhi himself was detained in the Aga Khan Palace in Poona, where his wife Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary Mahadev Desai both died during the detention. Pupils can use the chart to explain why the movement continued without its leaders, or write a short diary entry as a young participant. Hang it with clips or on a rail, away from damp and direct sunlight, and roll it loosely when it is put away.
