What Is the Revolutionaries Chart Used For?

History teachers use it to show that the freedom struggle was fought in many places and by many means, including by revolutionaries working in India and abroad. Each name on the chart opens a short story for the class. Vasudev Balwant Phadke raised an armed revolt against British rule in Maharashtra and died a prisoner in Aden. Ras Behari Bose was linked to the bomb attack on the Viceroy, Lord Hardinge, in Delhi, escaped to Japan and later handed over the Indian Independence League to Subhas Chandra Bose. V. D. Savarkar founded the Abhinav Bharat society and was imprisoned in the Cellular Jail in the Andamans, and Madan Lal Dhingra was hanged in London for shooting Sir William Curzon Wyllie. Many members of the Ghadar movement were Punjabi Sikh emigrants in North America.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre — when troops under General Dyer fired on an unarmed crowd gathered in Amritsar on Baisakhi day — is usually taught as the turning point that hardened Indian opinion against British rule. Pupils can prepare a short profile of one revolutionary from the chart, or mark on a map the places where each worked. Hang the chart with clips or on a rail, keep it dry and out of direct sunlight, and roll it loosely for storage.
