What Is the Ishihara Chart Used For?
Ishihara plates are pseudoisochromatic plates: each shows a circle of coloured dots in which a number, or on some plates a winding line, is picked out in dots of a different hue. A person with normal colour vision sees the figure, while a person with a red–green colour deficiency sees a different figure or none at all. The test is designed mainly to screen for red–green deficiencies. In schools it supports health checks and the biology lesson on sex-linked inheritance, where colour blindness is the classic example in the CBSE class 12 chapter on principles of inheritance; colleges use it in optometry and physiology practicals.
Show the plates in good daylight or a daylight-equivalent lamp, keep the book closed and away from sunlight when not in use so the colours do not fade, and refer anyone who misreads plates to an eye-care professional for a full assessment — the chart is a screening aid, not a diagnosis.
What to Specify When Ordering
